The Old Friend At The Station

The rain was falling heavily on the platform at Central Station. Ben stood under the small shelter, holding his coffee cup with both hands to keep warm. He checked his watch for the third time in a minute. The 5:15 train to London was late again. It was a typical Tuesday evening, and he felt tired from a long day at work. He just wanted to go home, relax on his sofa, and forget about all his problems.

Suddenly, a familiar voice called out his name. "Ben? Is that you?" Ben turned around slowly. His heart skipped a beat. Standing there was Sarah. She looked different, but he recognized her immediately. They had been best friends at university ten years ago. Since then, they had lost touch completely. He had moved to another city for a new job, and she had gone abroad to study art.

"Sarah!" Ben shouted, smiling widely. "I cant believe it! Its been so long." Sarah walked over to him, looking surprised but happy. She hugged him tightly. "I know, right? I was just thinking about you yesterday. I saw a photo of us online and remembered how much fun we used to have."

They stood close together, watching the rain hit the ground. The air smelled like wet concrete and old books from the nearby station shop. Ben felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him. He remembered their late-night talks in the library, their cheap pizza nights, and their dreams of traveling the world. Back then, everything seemed possible. Now, life had taken them in very different directions.

"Tell me about yourself," Sarah said, pulling out her phone to check the time. "You look busy." Ben laughed nervously. "Busy is an understatement. I work in marketing now. Its stressful, but I like it. Im saving money for a house. What about you? Are you still painting?"

Sarah smiled sadly. "Not really. I tried to make a living from art, but it was hard. So, I took a job at a design agency. It pays better, but I miss creating things with my hands sometimes." Ben nodded, understanding her feelings. He felt a pang of guilt for not staying in touch. They had both been so focused on their own lives that they had forgotten about each other.

The station masters voice came over the loudspeaker. "Attention please. The 5:15 to London is now arriving at platform four." Ben looked at his watch. He only had a few minutes left. "I have to go," he said quickly. "My train is coming." Sarah nodded, looking disappointed but understanding.

"Lets not lose touch again," she said firmly. She handed him her business card. "Call me this weekend. We should get coffee and catch up properly." Ben took the card and put it in his pocket. "I will. I promise."

As the train pulled into the station, Ben waved goodbye to Sarah. He felt a strange mix of sadness and hope. The past was gone, but the future was still open. He boarded the train and found a seat by the window. As the city lights blurred past the glass, he took out his phone and typed her number into his contacts. Ten years had passed, but some things never really change. He was ready to start a new chapter, one that included old friends and new beginnings. The rain continued to fall outside, but inside, Ben felt warm and hopeful for the first time in weeks.
