The Awkward Group Chat

Maya and Leo were best friends since primary school. They shared everything, from secrets to snacks. Last night, their small group chat was full of laughter. Maya sent a funny meme about Leos terrible cooking skills. It was an inside joke they had made for years. Everyone in the chat laughed hard. But then, Sarah, who had just joined the group last month, replied with a confused face emoji. She asked if Maya was being mean. The mood changed instantly. Leo saw the message and felt his stomach drop. He thought Maya was mocking him publicly. He typed a short, angry reply saying he didnt like her jokes anymore. Maya read it and felt hurt. She had only wanted to be funny. Now, two of their closest friends were upset with each other over a simple picture. The group chat went silent for an hour. No one knew what to do. Should they explain the joke? Or should they just apologize?
The next morning, Maya felt sick with worry. She couldnt focus on her work because she kept thinking about Leos face when he read her message. She knew it was a misunderstanding, but words in text can sound very cold. There is no tone of voice to show you are joking. She decided that texting more would only make things worse. If they continued arguing online, the friendship might break completely. She needed to talk to him properly.
At lunchtime, Maya walked over to Leos desk. Her heart was beating fast. She took a deep breath and sat down next to him. "Leo," she said softly. "I am really sorry. I didnt mean to hurt you. That joke was old and silly, but I never meant it to be mean." Leo looked at her, then at the floor. He sighed. "I know," he admitted. "I reacted badly. I felt embarrassed because Sarah didnt get the context. I should have asked instead of getting angry."
They both smiled a little. It was awkward, but honest. They agreed that group chats can be tricky. Sometimes, it is better to stop typing and start talking. From that day on, they made a rule. If something feels serious or confusing in the chat, they would call each other or meet in person. Misunderstandings happen, but communication fixes them. Their friendship was stronger than a few bad words on a screen. They went back to sharing stories, this time with more care and understanding.
