The alarm clock buzzed at seven oclock. Leo sat up in bed and rubbed his eyes. He felt a sudden wave of panic wash over him. Today was Sams birthday! He had completely forgotten. His heart began to beat faster. He quickly grabbed his phone and typed a message to his two best friends, Mia and David. "Did you remember Sam's birthday?" he asked. The reply came almost instantly. "No," Mia wrote. "I totally forgot." David sent a voice note that sounded very worried. "Oh no! I have no idea what to do!"
The three friends met at their usual coffee shop twenty minutes later. They looked stressed and tired. Sam was not there yet, which gave them a small window of opportunity. They needed to plan a surprise party, but they had almost no time. The problem was that they all had very different ideas. Mia wanted something quiet and romantic. She suggested they go to a nice restaurant downtown. "It will be elegant," she said, stirring her latte. "We can order his favorite pasta."
David disagreed strongly. He thought a restaurant was too boring. "No way," he shouted, pointing at the menu. "Sam loves action! We should take him to the indoor climbing center. It is exciting and fun!" Leo listened to both of them. He felt a headache coming on. He looked at his watch. They only had two hours before Sam would arrive for their regular lunch meeting. If they did not decide now, they would miss the chance entirely.
The argument grew louder. Other customers started to look at them strangely. Mia crossed her arms and frowned. David was pacing around the table. Leo realized that arguing was not helping. He needed a solution that combined their ideas or found a middle ground. He thought about Sams personality. Sam loved food, but he also loved adventure. However, they did not have enough time to travel far or book expensive reservations.
Leo took a deep breath and raised his hand for silence. "Stop," he said calmly. "We are wasting time. We cannot go to the climbing center because it is too far. And we cannot book a table at that fancy restaurant because it takes weeks." Mia looked disappointed, but she nodded. David stopped pacing. "So what do we do?" Leo asked.
Leo smiled slightly. He had an idea. "We go to the park," he said. "It is sunny today. We can buy a big cake from the bakery next door. It is cheap and fast. Then, we can play frisbee in the park. It is active like David wants, but it is relaxed like Mia likes. And we can eat the cake together."
Mia thought for a moment. "A picnic in the park? That sounds nice. I can bring some fruit." David shrugged his shoulders. "Frisbee is okay. I guess I can play." They all agreed to the plan. The tension in the room disappeared. They felt relieved and excited again.
They ran to the bakery and bought a chocolate cake with Sams name on it. Then, they hurried to the park. It was a beautiful day. The grass was green, and the trees were full of leaves. They set up a blanket under a large oak tree. Just as they finished arranging the fruit and drinks, they heard footsteps.
"Hey guys!" Sam called out. He walked towards them with a smile. "Ready for lunch?" Leo, Mia, and David stood up together. "Happy Birthday, Sam!" they shouted in unison. Sam looked confused at first. Then he saw the cake. His eyes widened. "You remembered?" he asked, looking from one friend to the other.
"We almost didn't," Leo admitted with a laugh. "But we are here now." Sam hugged them all tightly. He was genuinely happy. They spent the next few hours playing frisbee, eating cake, and talking about old memories. The sun began to set as they packed up their things. It was not the perfect party they had initially imagined, but it was special because of the effort they made. As they walked home, Leo felt a sense of pride. He realized that friendship is not about expensive gifts or perfect plans. It is about showing up for the people you care about, even when you make mistakes. They agreed to meet again next week, and this time, they would definitely remember the date.
